The
First 50 Years. GCU (Greek Catholic Union of the U.S.A)
was organized in 1892 when immigrants from the Carpathian Mountain
region of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire in Eastern Europe came
to America seeking greater opportunities. GCU lodges emerged in areas
where the immigrant Greek Catholics established communities, namely
the industrial and manufacturing centers. As each decade passed,
GCU grew in members and assets. While our nation was immersed in
World War II, GCU quietly, but confidently, celebrated its 50th anniversary.
The
Next 50 Years. The post-war era brought economic growth
to America, and the GCU was no exception. God, family, and employment
were the priorities of this forward looking membership. GCU lodges
and their charitable and benevolent activities moved onward, often
to the suburbs and other newly established communities. GCU led the
way among its peers in implementing an Annuity program in 1977. One
year later it opened its Seven Oaks Country Club in Beaver, Pennsylvania.
After moving its Home Office to the Beaver site in 1987, GCU found
it fitting to construct its Saint Nicholas Chapel in conjunction
with its centennial in 1992.
Today
and the Future. With
its business operations, fraternal outreach and longevity well defined,
GCU is poised to meet the needs of current and prospective members
with products and services for this and the century to come. At GCU--we
work hard to earn your trust. Allow us the opportunity to bring the
benefits of GCU membership to you and your family.
