District 5 Recent Events

District Five has been so busy with many activities for members of all ages. The No-Tap Bowling Tournament was held on November 14, 2009 at Chacko’s Family Bowling Center in Wilkes Barre, PA. Forty three bowlers participated in the event. Twenty teams entered for our optional mixed doubles competition. GCU officers in attendance were National Officers-Dorothy Foran, Director; District 6 Officers-President Rick Hoppey; Secretary/Athletic Director Agnes Rohrbach; Assistant Athletic Director Dave Rohrbach; Auditors Marge Hoppey and Al Kringer; District 5 Officers-President Gina Keil; Athletic Director Ed Keil; Assistant Athletic Director Walt Dorzinsky; Secretary Colleen Evans; and Auditor Marge Dorzinsky.
Congratulations are extended to Ed Kowalski on his perfect no-tap 300 game. First and second place winners included: Men’s-First, Walt Popko/Mike Kommath; Second, Ed Dolinish/Joe Chaiko; Women’s-First, Dorothy Foran/Janice Moyer; Second, Marlene Yuschak/Dottie Bakalar; Mixed-First Place, Dottie Bakalar/Bob J. Bakalar; Second Place, Janice Moyer/John Moyer.
The Ski/Winter Outing for Districts 5, 6 and 7 was held on January 23, 2010 at Big Boulder Ski Resort, Lake Harmony, PA. District 5 articipants were; Ali, Victoria, AJ, and Andrew Sluko; Edward, Tanya, Demetrius, Macrina and Ilona Dolinish, Greg, Crystal, and Adrianna Vladika, and Robert, Alexis, Hunter, and Tara Latzanich.
The Annual Founders’ Day Brunch and meeting was held on February 14 at Saint Nicholas Church in Old Forge, PA. Everyone feasted on covered dishes brought by the members and celebrated the founding of the GCU in Wilkes-Barre 118 years ago. Christie Petty, GCU Fraternal Director from the Home Office, gave an update on her department and ideas for new activities.
The Sixth Annual District 5 free Throw Shooting Contest was held at St. Mary’s Byzantine Catholic Church Gymnasium in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday, February 20. There were 43 participants who competed in nine divisions. Winners in the following categories were… Girls 10-12: Kyra Wozniak; Girls 13-14: Lia Legg. The Girls Scholarship division was won by Nicole Tanana. Boys 8-11: T.J. Wozniak; Boys 12-13: Mike Wozniak.
Laure Close was the winner in the Ladies 19-64 Division. M.J. Zayac won the Men’s 19-64 Division. Mary Close was winner for Women 65+ while John Evans led Men’s 65+. Medals and ribbons were presented to the winners.
Members of District 5 attended a Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Hockey game on February 27 at the Mohegan Sun Arena in Wilkes-Barre Township. All in attendance had an enjoyable evening and received a Bobble head doll of one of the players and a Penguin baseball cap.
Sincere condolences are extended to the families of Mary Ann Wahal and Henry Lesneski, who recently passed away. Both had been active members in District 5 for many years. Eternal Memory and Blessed Repose.
Get well wishes and speedy recoveries are sent to Ann Chaiko, Whitey Kahanik, and Theresa Kish. Easter wishes to all–Christ Is Risen! Indeed He is Risen!
