Recent District 11 Event and Photos
District 11’s third quarterly meeting of took place August 18 at St. Michael’s Byzantine Catholic Church in Flushing. After the opening prayer by Fr. Robert Barter, District 11 chaplain, GCU National President George Juba presented an update on what is available for Districts in 2011 regarding a possible change in administrative structure. Districts may elect to continue in the same format that they are already operating, or the lodges may choose to do away with the district structure. However, all of the lodges would have to agree to do that or the district format would remain in effect. In other words, one lodge could not decide to secede from the district format and the rest stay in the district format. Mr. Juba also stated that the 2012 GCU Natiohal Convention will take place in Atlantic City, NJ at the Tropicana Resort, with official Convention sessions taking place on June 26 and 27, 2012.
The Interparish GCU Bowling League started its 2010-2011 season on September 19 at 2 pm at Sunnybrook Lanes, Sterling Hts., MI. The league bowls every other week with the season ending May 1. There is always a big welcome sign out for those interested in joining the league. Contact Paul Shubeck or Gary Mozuras if you are interested in becoming a member of the league.
The GCU national ski weekend will be the last weekend in January at Boyne Mountain Resort in Michigan. There will be the opportunity to get a discount on condos if you would like to stay in one of those, as opposed to a room the Edelweiss Lodge. The condos available will be at the Mountain Villas or Disciple’s Ridge. The room rate will be $115 this year and the condo price will be discounted according to whether you book a condo that sleeps 10 to 14, or 6 to 10 people. You must let them know that you are booking under GCU to get the discount.
A big congratulations to Kimberly Kaufman (Lodge 860) who represented our district entry in the Junior Bowling Tournament, as she was the national winner for the girls. Way to go Kimberly!
The winners for the District 11 scholarship for 2010 are Michael R. Berezny of Lodge 319 and Mary Biglin of Lodge 860. The award of $500 per scholarship will be sent directly to them. Michael Berezny is a senior at Kettering University (GMI) with a major in mechanical engineering. Mary Biglin is a sophomore at the University of Michigan majoring in pharmacy. Congratulations to both of our scholarship recipients.
The Hoops shooting contest took place on September 11 at the Immaculate Conception school gym in Warren, MI. Marianne Nagrant was the winner for the fifth year in a row for the senior women’s division. Congrats to her! The gym was full for the awards ceremony which took place immediately following the tail gate party which was a big success. Thanks to all who helped with that venture! We had three buses go to Tiger Stadium for the game. John Michalski came from Anchorage, Alaska, to take part in the district event. (Actually he was in town visiting relatives and decided to take advantage of the opportunity to come with us to the game.) Unfortunately he says, there is not a GCU lodge or district that he is aware of in Anchorage. Maybe something can be done about that in the future! The Tigers unfortunately did not beat the Baltimore Orioles after the rain delay, but it ended up being a pleasant evening which was concluded by a fantastic fireworks display at Comerica Park after the game. Better luck next year for GCU Night at Comerica Park!
