

District Three Junior Bowling
Tournaments east
and west took place on Sunday February 24 and March 2 respectively.
Tournament east was held at the Holiday Bowl in Struthers Ohio and
coordinated by Nancy Kovach. Thirty-five GCU bowlers and guests participated
in the east tournament. Following the event they were treated to pizza,
soft drinks and cookies. Nancy and Betty Stanko served the refreshments.
Afterwards, all bowlers were awarded ribbons and
winners were given trophies. The following bowlers won their division. Girls:
(2-3) Sophie Butchko; (4-5) Alexandra Bisel; (6-7) Kacie Roth and (12-13) Tiffany
Komara. Boys: (4-5) Joseph Roth: (8-9) Nick DeSalvo; (10-12) Adam Macala
and (16-18) Erik Buerhle.
Tournament west was held at Cloverleaf Lanes
in Independence, Ohio and was coordinated by district Athletic Director Jean
Karaffa. Thirty-three bowlers and guests participated in the west event. They
too were treated to refreshments after finishing the competition. Ribbons and
trophies were then given to the bowlers. Winners of the West Tournament are
as follows: Girls: (203) Alayna Karaffa; (4-5) Gabi Atanaskovic; (6-7)
Payton Ambrose; (8-9) Angela Sidoti; (10-12) Annika Kisha; (13-15)
Amanda Trompak; (16-18) Jennifer Trompak. Boys: (4-5) Gregory Karaffa;
(6-7) Joe Wuff; (8-9) Cade Ambrose; (10-12) David Bratnik; (13-15)
Mark Primuth.
Erik Buerhle and Jennifer Trompak will represent
the district in the National Junior Tournament Rolloff in July during GCU Family
Fun Week. Winners of that tournament will be awarded a scholarship.


The
Foul Shooting Contest was held on Saturday March
15. Winners of the Hoop Shoot were as follows: Sr. Men: Ed Keshok,
Girls: 5 th & 6 th grade–Emily Havrilla, Girls: 7 th & 8
th grade–Andrea Trompak, Boys: 7 th & 8 th grade–Brian
Havrilla, Girls: 9 th through 12 th grade–Rebecca Havrilla,
Boys: 9 th through 12 th grade–Carl Kaczor.
Carl and Rebecca
are eligible to participate in the national hoop shooting contest
to be held in July during GCU Family Fun Week. Winners receive a
scholarship.
District 3’s second quarterly meeting was
held on April 20 in Warren. Eighty-three members and guests attended.
National officers in attendance were National Directors John Urban
and Michael W. Karaffa, Fr. Richard Lambert, Spiritual Advisor, Judy
Weitzel member of the Supreme Tribunal, and Helen Yurko, Honorary
Officer.
We thank Sr. Margaret M Schima and members of Lodge
814 for graciously hosting this meeting.
The membership chose St Mary’s
Catholic School in Cleveland and the Byzantine Catholic Central School in Youngstown
as the recipients of monies to be raised from our national funds project.
Bunny
Hlivko addressed the membership and spoke about her lodge’s
February “Through the Heart” food drive to help the disadvantaged.
Many of the people from the disadvantaged neighborhoods helped with
the drive.
Nancy Kovach gave the athletic director’s
report in the absence of Jean Karaffa. She recapped the junior bowling tournament
and hoop shooting contest (see related articles). John Keblesh suggested
that applications for the Davey Petrus Memorial Golf Tournament be
sent to all golfers in the district. Dennis Chrustic responded and
said he would ask the Home Office to send applications to all lodge
secretaries for distribution to their lodge members.
Dennis said that
he is working on a trip to the Youngstown Scrappers baseball team in August.
John Urban spoke briefly about National Convention
procedures and what would be taking place at the convention in June. He said
that National President George Juba would be in Cleveland on June 16 to meet
with the District 3 delegates and answer any questions.
Our next quarterly meeting
will be held on July 20 at
St. Nicholas Church in Lorain, OH.
 
The 7th
annual Mystery Doubles Tournament took place
on April 26. Twenty-seven bowlers and 5 guests attended the event.
Bowlers competed at Cloverleaf Lanes. Bowlers checked in with assistant
athletic director Jerry Holderbaum for their lane assignment and filled
out their “guess who my partner is” slip. Following the
competition, bowlers drove to St. Joseph Byzantine Activities Center
for dinner, prizes and fraternalism.

Ciresi and Carl Emch; 2nd Jean Karaffa and Ralph Contipelli; 3rd
Rose Bero and John Reiger; 4th Julie Tirpak and Michael Karaffa; 5th
Jean Karaffa and Paul Maruna; 6th Bonnie Ciresi and Jack Arrowrood, 7th Mary
Biros and Mic Cimperman and 8th Rita Contipelli and Wally Christy.
Individual
High Game winners were Carl Emch with a 279 and Jean Karaffa with a 201. Doubles
High Game winners were Bonnie Ciresi and Carl Emch with a 442.
We thank Jerry
Holderbaum and Dorothy Tyburski for their help with the tournament. Special thanks
go to Bea Chrustic for catering our dinner. Also, we thank Andy Zeedick, Martha
Seech, Dave Oleksa and Mike Karaffa for the door prize donations.
